WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

Each lesson is adapted to the specific needs of the student, but generally includes the following:
  • posture and breathing exercises
  • vocalises (vocal exercises)
  • application of technique covered in the lesson to a song
When students have no previous musical training they will also be coached in basic music theory as necessary. Tips for song interpretation, style, stage movement, career advice, etc. will also be offered as appropriate.

Students can bring in music they want to work on, or will be assigned repertoire appropriate to their vocal range in a variety of styles from the great American songbook, musical theater and contemporary pop music. (Sheet music in your own key is most helpful. If music needs to be transposed, I can refer you to an accompanist.)

Students get the most out of their instruction when they practice. Even ten minutes a day is enough to make progress – it's better to do a short amount consistently then to do a lot every once in a while (just like training at the gym!).

It is highly recommended that students bring in a cassette tape (tape recorder provided) or their own MP3 recorder to record their lesson.

CANCELLATIONS

If you cannot make a lesson and give 24 hours notice, you can make up that lesson at a mutually convenient time. If you cancel or miss a lesson with less than 24 hours notice, you are liable for full payment for that lesson. If for any reason I have to cancel or change a lesson, I will reschedule at a mutually convenient time or refund the cost of the lesson.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY...

"I've always wanted to be able to sing in a Gospel choir and the lessons made it a reality!"
- JR

"I just wanted to express my deep thanks to you for helping me to prepare my voice for my college auditions. I found your classes to be helpful, encouraging, and time-effective. I think you'll be pleased to hear that I got into both schools…"
- JO

"Celia is both methodical and creative in her teaching…She teaches in a way that gradually adds challenges, and is unfailingly supportive and good-humored the entire time. Celia has also helped me bring much more expression to the songs I sing, helping me find a way to sing from a true place within me."
- KW

"I got through auditions and was very glad I'd had some training with you! The upshot is I have been offered a place at East 15 School of Acting in East London."
- RR

Workshops

Performance Workshop
Saturday, May 17, 2008 - 12:00 - 5:00 PM

Become a more confident and expressive performer as you prepare for auditions, gigs, or open mics. In a supportive group atmosphere, focus on aspects of your vocal performance, including:
  • Vocal technique: expand your range, smooth out breaks.
  • Interpretation: become a more expressive performer by making the lyrics your own.
  • Accompanist: learn how to help the accompanist help you.
  • Stage presence: capture and enrapture your audience.
  • Performance anxiety: learn techniques used by professional performers and athletes to use your fear to power your performance.
  • Stage patter: stop losing your audience between songs. Use patter to bond with them.
You will need to have chosen and memorized your material in the correct keys prior to the class (1-3 pieces). Accompanist provided.
